Cloth Napkins.

So the other day, I was browsing the web and came upon some cloth napkins.  Now being a family of 10 with 9 people currently living at home (oldest son lives in a different state), you can say we go through a lot of napkins.  So I decided to try and make some cloth napkins.  The hardest part for me was choosing which type of fabric.  I did a search on the web and found that basically any fabric will do.  This was good news.  I had some dresses that my older daughters did not like (I didn't like the fabric much) so I decided to use them.  Since this was just a trial run what harm could it do seeing that the dresses where headed for the dump.

Next was deciding on a pattern.  I knew that I did not want large napkins,  I just wanted them big enough for my younger girls.  I decided to copy a wash cloth and use that as a pattern.  I thought the size of it was perfect.

After they were all cut up I serged the sides.  I really did not want to hem them.  Serging them was just so much more quicker.

Here they are

These are just 2 that were left from the 8 that I made.  They fit perfectly in my napkin holder.  They were a hit with my kids.

I did not like the fabric as a dress, but as napkins they are really pretty.

Summer, Summer, Summer Time

Sing along with me "Summer, Summer, Summer Time," "Summer Time".

Well that's the only part of the song I know...

Seeing how the temperature yesterday (Memorial Day) went up to 90*(NJ/NY area.)  It reminded me of the Summer. Here are some pictures of us enjoying Summer last year.

I love the Summer and I can not wait until it is officially here.

Blog Theft, This is a must read!

I was over at BlogHer and read a post about a woman who had gotten her blog stolen.  I am not talking posts stolen but all her info was stolen.  Her blog was hijacked (like what they do to planes).  Her domain was stolen.  Can you believe this!  It was stolen from China!, China!, yes you read right China.  This is very real and very scary if you ask me.  Please head on over and read her article, you can read it on her site or from BlogHer here

Skirt Week

I joined the Skirt Week contest that Crafthours is having.  Here are The Rules.
Basically you have till June 8th at midnight to enter your skirt.  It has to be a skirt made since July 1, 2011.
You can use any pattern/ fabric, just don't forget to give credit.  You may enter up to 3 per category.
The categories are A-Line, Straight, Full and Children's skirts.
Here is one skirt that I plan on entering
Its from Burda magazine issue 9/10.  The lining is crepe back satin which was not a good idea. It slides around to much.  So I plan on removing the lining and adding a new lining.
The other skirt I plan on entering is Miss B's(dd#2) skirt.  Its a blue knit.  I just need to finish up the waist and its done.   Maybe I will try and make another skirt to enter in the contest, lets see.  I have a lot of projects that I need to finish.
I think this is going to be fun, can't wait to see all the skirts people make and the patterns they use.

Quiet at the home front A.K.A Sewing Time-out

Well its actually not been quiet ( It never is in a house with 7 kids) :)  I just haven't had much time to sew lately.  This year 2 of my kids are in sports, 1 plays baseball( actually its T-Ball) and we also signed her up for soccer.  My 10yo ds is in baseball.  So with games and practices its been hard to sew.
Also I am in the process of preparing my kids school schedule.  We school through the summer but with a much lighter load, unless they slacked off during the school year.  Then they have to make up any unfinished work over the summer.  You can read more about our schooling here.

As far as sewing goes I have a lot of projects in mind.  First off I have to finish dd#2's skirt.  Its a knit so I am thankful for my serger.  It makes sewing knits so much easier.  Then there are 2 ladies in our church that are expecting.  One is having a boy, the other a girl.  I plan on making them some bibs and burp cloths.  You can never have to many of these as a mom with a new born.  DD#2(miss B) is graduating this June.  So I would like to make myself a dress.  She wants a store bought dress and this is fine.  Its her day.  I would also like to make Miss A and Miss J (dd's #3&4) dresses for this occasion also.  I have part of one dress done already, I just need to finish it up and start on the other one.

As for my dress I can not make up my mind.   Which is crazy because I don't have a lot of time left, her graduation is on June 5th.  Yup you read right June 5th.  I must like to feel as if I'm going crazy.  I can never figure out why I wait till the last minute to do things.

Here are just a some of the dresses I am considering.

Burda Issue 11/2011

Burda Issue 11/2011

Burda Issue 10/2011

These are just a few dresses.  There are many more.  So many choices.  I think I am leaning towards the last dress, the burgundy one.  Not sure. I'm really liking the first dress.  I bought some nice crepe back satin that I can use for this dress.  Its a beautiful greenish color.  Something like a pale green. Its really pretty.  :)
