New Dress

My dd was invited to a birthday costume party.  So this means i get to sew her a dress, YAYYYYYY.
She wants to go as a Geisha, so I am making her a dress out of Asian fabric.  Its a fitted dress, the pattern is from Burdastyle. Its called The Fatina, I'm doing the version that has the Asian style collar.  I will definately post up picks as soon as I have the dress done.  Its basically done I just want her to try it on and see if i need to make adjustments to it.

Some sewing done

Finally i was able to get some sewing in.  Here is miss A's fall jacket. its from Otto 1/2007 #12 size 92.  Made with some fabric I got at Jo's.
Close up of the fabric.  I just love this fabric......
1/2009 #5 size 92 Chez Ami fabric.  I added some length it it to make it a dress.  These are perfect for winter.  I plan on making her a few more.

My Sons Youtube Site

I created a YouTube site for M.  He has created 2 movies already.  Here is the link  MCRFilmProductions.  He has enjoyed making these.  He basically does them by himself.  The first one he did with legos, his big brother J helped him and so did his dad.  The second one he used (homemade) play dough. He made this video on his own.  I only showed him how to make it into a movie.

Tell me what you think of them.

We got a Pool!!!!!!

They kids love it..  Its not big 12x36. Its a nice size seeing that all the kids fit in it at the same time and they can all run around in it.  Its one of those easy fill pools.  I had wanted one with walls but we couldn't find one.  This one was one sale for $79.99 but when we went to pay it came up to $55.00.  So I will not complain.  I had wanted one that was a little deeper but this is good.  We did not fill it all the way up, so now both of the little girls (3yo, 17month) can stand in it).  The water comes to about the 17 month old shoulders.  The kids had a ball in it regardless of the height of the water.

My yard still looks like a jungle.  I really need to clean it up.  I plan on making (with the help of my son) the patio set.  I have come to accept the fact that here is where the Lord wants me to be.  So I will begin to fix up little by little.(yes this means that I have avoided doing anything because I was hoping to move to a bigger house).

And now for some pictures

Sorry for the blurred spot.  The baby touched the lens and we did not know.

Little Man Shirt

Here is the Little Man Shirt I made for my grandson.  Its a size 86(about 24months).  Sorry for the bad picture but when I added the flash it came out a different color.  Its from Ottobre 3/2009 #10 and it's called the "little man shirt".  I never know boys clothes were so fun to make.  The collar didn't come out exactly square and the buttons are a little wonky but all in all I love the shirt.  Now to make him a bunch more.

Strawberry picking

Today we had a field trip with our homeschool group.   We went strawberry picking.  These strawberries taste so much better then the ones you buy at the supermarket.  They were so yummy.  I ate most of them.  The farm was really nice, they had hayrides, homemade ice cream, and farm animals all around.  The kids had a blast and so did we.  Here are some pictures of our trip.

Growing kids

On Saturday my oldest miss N took her SAT's.  This was just her practice run at it.  She will be taking them 3 more times.  One of those will be her PSAT's and 2 more runs at the SAT's.  People say that the more you take them the better it is because with each go at it your scores increase.  College Board has a free practice test that you take online, which is graded for you.  She also took this practice test and scored a 1620 out of a possible 2400.  A 1500 is about average, so I am very happy with her score.  We do not homeschool the conventional way, meaning I do not use textbooks.  Basically my kids read, do math and write everyday.  This is the best way to learn.  They do not read water downed books(abridged) they read the original copies. We do have abridged copies of some books because some of my kids can not wait to read them.  This makes it easier to read but once their reading level is up they are no longer allowed to read them.

The best way to learn how to write is actually from reading good books and writing.  Teachers do not grade papers by analyzing whether the periods are in the correct spot, commas or anything else.  Papers are graded by content and the writing part is graded by the sound part.  Does what you just wrote about sound correct when read?

I have never taught my daughter grammar or language arts and she scored an 8 out of a possible 12 on the writing section of the practice SAT that she took online.  Lord willing her test scores are as good or even better then her practice test.

1 Jacket done.

I have finally finished Miss J's jacket. Its from Ottobre 1/2007 # 12 size 80. The seam ripper became my best friend with this project.  This is the first time I made a lined jacket.  At first I couldn't seem to figure out how to attach the lining to the outer fabric.  The collar part was easy, it was the front side part.  I knew how it should look but just quite couldn't figure it out.  So after a few days and reading and rereading the directions I finally got it this morning.  I was up at 4 getting hubby ready for work , so after he left I spent some time in prayer and then decided to finish the jacket.

I love the way it came out.  I used cord for the outer and a cotton woven for the lining.  I added my tag and a loop thing(not sure what its called) to use to hang the jacket.  The tag and loop thing are not centered.  The snaps where pretty easy to put on seeing that this was the first time I ever did snaps.  One snap is not completely even but you can hardly tell.  Its a little big on her right now but will fit perfect for the fall. Well enough here it is.

The Shirt Dress

This dress was made from a womens button down shirt I got at the goodwill.  It is so easy to make and it looks great.  You can add rick-rack to it if you want.  I didn't to mine I left it as it was.  It can be a dress or a shirt for an older girl, you just have to get a bigger size.  I made this last year for miss A and now miss J can wear it,  Well enough here is miss J wearing the shirt.

Basically the front of the shirt becomes the back of the dress, and the back of the shirt becomes the front of the dress.  That is how you get the top to look the way it does.  Then you use the sleeves of the shirt with some elastic to make the sleeves for the dress.  EASY EASY EASY.  I love clothes that are easy and fast to sew.  My mom came over today and couldn't believe that I sewed the dress. Of course all I had to do was show her the inside seams :)

Mother's Day Dresses

I am so happy that I finished them before Mother's Day, even with a day to spear.  YEA!!!!!  As you can see I love this dress pattern, its from Ottobre Spring 2007 issue, #11.  It is a basic everyday dress, yet can be a dress for a special occasion.  I don't have a serger but figured out how to make the lettuce edge with my sewing machine.  I basically used a short zigzag stitch to create the lettuce edge.  On the dress sized 92 I decided to leave out the elastic and add the lettuce edge.  I think it came out very nice.  I also did the hems with the lettuce edge.  I like that the lettuce edge is very girly.   Here are some pictures

Healthy Eating

I just posted some info on my healthy eating page, but for now here is a little bit of information that I have.
Everywhere you go you see fat-free, people don't even drink whole milk any more because they say it has to much fat.  I believe that its sugar not fat making people obese.  Our liver turns sugar into fat.  What has happened over time is that the food companies have removed the fat ( which is what gives our food flavor) and added sugar (doesn't matter what form) to our foods.  The worst of it all is HFCS (high fructose corn syrup).  This is in almost all the foods we eat.  This is not good for our livers.  Here is a video on the dangers of sugar.

Summer Time

I love the summer......We are a very sports oriented family... my 12yo dd loves swimming, 13yo ds loves baseball and tackle football. He has won 3 football championships with his team and 3 Jackets to show for it.  My 10 ds plays soccer and my 8yo ds is finally out of t-ball and playing baseball, he is a pitcher, an all-around fielder and a good hitter.  He also plays tackle football, has won 1 championship and a jacket also.  My oldest dd (16yo) is into sports but does not play she is more artistic.  I am not sure whats in store for the two little ones.

So i have been very busy with practices and games for baseball.  This year is much better then last when I had 2 playing baseball and 1 playing T-ball.  I was in the park all day, every day.

So I don't have much time to sew which I hope changes,  Lord willing I am going to try and make a schedule to help organize my days.

Labels Labels I have Labels.

So I made my first labels.  I think they came out ok, I think I can make them better.  For now they will do.   Here is how I made them.  I bought ink jet printable freezer paper and ironed my fabric to the paper, then I opened up word and wrote my "logo", then I printed it directly onto the fabric (yes this works I simply put the freezer paper with the fabric in the printer.  You can only do it this way with an ink jet printer).  After which I cut them up and sew them into my garments.  I am so happy.........Well here it is

this is an up close view..... I will add the size with a fabric pen.  I would like to make a tag that also includes washing instructions.  This will be good if I decide to sell clothes and even when I hand them down to others.

Here you can see the fabric ironed on to the paper.  with this way there is no flipping of the words.  I also used a heavy font that I made bold......did this because I wanted the print to be dark.

You can also do this with regular freezer paper.  The problem is you have to glue the freezer paper to regular printing paper before you put it in the printer.  I avoided this step by buying printable freezer paper.

Let me know if you give this a try.

Bye

Miss J's Dress

I finished her dress awhile back but am only now able to post it.  Since this was my second time sewing this pattern it came out much better then the first.  I love this pattern and plan to make the girls a whole lot more.  I want to try and adjust the pattern to add long sleeves for the winter and lowering the gathering to about waist length.  I have 2 jackets and 2 more dresses (same pattern) cut out and ready to sew.  I am really behind on their summer swaps, I need to get sewing.

Ottobre

I got my magazine today. I am loving the patterns in this issue.  I love this mag, it gives me patterns for all my kids...much better then the top 3 pattern publishers in the US I have to say. I am loving that this issue has 3 hat patterns... here are some pictures...

Easter

Being the procrastinator that I am, I finished the girls dresses the Saturday before Easter.  I stayed up till 2 am sewing up the dresses. The first on came out better then the last on (sleep deprivation).  On the second dress I made the last button hole is a few inches lower then the button itself.  I don't like the way the collars came out.  I think they were a little to big, but all in all the dresses were nice. While I was making the dresses I realized "hey I can actually make time to sew", its just a matter of managing my time.  Well the dresses came out good.  They were from the Ottobre mag Summer 3/2009 # 5

Miss A can fit in a size 80.  The dress in this size fits her as a shirt.  So I plan on making more of these for her as tunic style tops.  Well enough with the writing here are Miss A in size 92(orange) and miss J in size 80(green).

I am still working on their spring/summer swaps.  Hopefully I'll get them done before fall/winter comes.

Polka-Dot Dress

Here is miss A in her Polka-Dot dress.  I am so glad I did a test run first because I then realized that I needed 2 pieces for the skirt part.(in the test run I only had 1 piece).  This dress was very easy to put together.  The fabrics were from Chez Ami and my stash.  I made it a size 92 which fits her a little big, but that just means she gets to wear it longer.  Her whole swap will be made in a size 92 so everything will fit her into the fall and then we layer.  I have yet to hem it.  I love this dress, I will be making more.  I'm thinking of adding some sleeves for the winter months.  Lets see.

Test run

I did a test run of one of the swap pieces from both girls swaps #11(polka-dot knit dress).  Its from the spring issue of ottobre(1/2007)
This was pretty easy to put together.  I have a Kenmore sewing machine.  The coolest thing that I found out , I have a serger stitch on my sewing machine. This is also sad because I've had this machine for years, I mean years, but thats how much sewing time I've had.  The wonders of having a sewing table are unbelievable, you really need one( at least I do) if you want to get any sewing done.  This is good for me since I don't have a Serger.  I really need to get one.  Anyway here is a picture of miss A in her "dress". Since I used an unimportant piece of fabric it will be used as a nightgown.

Yayyyyyyyy Fabrics are all here

I just received my last package of fabric in the mail.  I can finally start on my swaps.  I can't wait. Here are some pictures of my fabrics.

These are all Chez Ami fabrics.

These are from fabric.com and banberry place.

Off to sew.

Tired of tracing

Ok I have 2 dresses, 2 jackets and 1 shirt traced out and ready to cut, I was going to trace all my patterns first then cut then on to fabrics.... well I 'm tired of tracing ... so I'm going to cut these patterns and make the clothes.  I get bored easily so maybe this way I wont get so bored with all the tracing and cutting.  Making swaps for 2 girls I have alot of tracing to do.

I GOT IT YAYYYYYYY

After searching for this pattern, I was finally able to find it.  It is being discontinued, so I am very happy to have been able to buy it.  The Farbenmix Feliz Pattern.  A very Twirly Dress.

Start Sewing

If I can manage to get off this comp maybe I can start sewing.  Its so hard because I keep finding all these things to make. Like this pettiskirt

Its made by Martha, yes the one you are thinking of.  I figure I could make a few of these for less then what they sell them for in boutiques.  But of course I gotta get of the comp.LOL

Here are some patterns that I bought

you can see some examples of this dress here.
